Important Notes

  • Dress Code: St. Peter’s Basilica is a holy place with a strict dress code. Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women. Short skirts, shorts above the knee, and sleeveless shirts are not permitted inside. We recommend bringing a light scarf or jacket to cover up if you’re wearing summer attire. (A handy tip: a scarf can be used to cover shoulders or tied as a sarong for legs if needed.) Visitors not dressed appropriately may be denied entry by Vatican staff, so please plan ahead to avoid any issues.
  • Security Check: All visitors must go through a security screening (metal detectors) before entering the Basilica. No knives, sharp objects, glass bottles, drones, or weapons are allowed. There is no bag check or storage at the Basilica, so bring only what you need. While our skip-the-line service dramatically reduces waiting time, some short wait at security is still possible, especially during peak hours. We appreciate your patience – the reward is worth it!
  • Punctuality: Please be on time. We request you to arrive 15 minutes before your tour’s start time for check-in. Due to Vatican schedules, we cannot delay the departure of the tour for late arrivals. If you are running late, call us ASAP – we will do our best to help you join, but we cannot guarantee entry if you miss the designated time.
  • Tour Duration & Pace: This is a one-hour fast-track tour covering the highlights of St. Peter’s. It is designed to be efficient yet comprehensive. The Basilica is vast, so be prepared for a fair amount of walking and standing. Wear comfortable shoes. The pace is moderate, but we ensure there’s time to admire key sights and even a moment to pause for photos.
  • Accessibility: The main interior of St. Peter’s Basilica is wheelchair accessible (there are ramps/elevators at entrances). However, the Papal Grottoes (underground crypt) have a staircase and are not wheelchair accessible. If you or someone in your group uses a wheelchair or has limited mobility, please inform us in advance. We will make necessary arrangements (e.g. alternate routes or additional assistance) so you can enjoy the tour as much as possible. Note that strollers are allowed inside the Basilica, but they will need to be carried on stairs to visit the crypt area.
  • Religious Services and Unexpected Closures: St. Peter’s Basilica is an active place of worship. Occasionally, parts of the Basilica may close on short notice for Papals Masses, ceremonies, or state visits. For example, on Wednesday mornings the Basilica can be closed until noon due to the Papal Audience in the square, and some areas might be off-limits during special events. If an unexpected closure affects your tour, our guide will adjust the itinerary to include more content in the open areas, or we’ll try to reschedule you for later in the day. In the rare case that the Basilica is fully closed for the entire day (very uncommon), we will offer you an alternative or a full refund. Rest assured, we do our best to ensure you get the experience you booked!
  • Photography: Photography is allowed inside St. Peter’s Basilica (no flash, please, to protect the art). Feel free to take photos of the stunning interior during your tour. However, photography is strictly prohibited in the Sistine Chapel and some parts of the Grottoes – our tour does not include the Sistine Chapel, and in the Grottoes we ask that you respect the signs if photos are not allowed. Your guide will inform you of any no-photo zones. In general, respectful behavior is expected since this is a religious site.
  • Stay After the Tour: One of the perks of ending the tour inside the Basilica is that you can stay as long as you like afterwards (until closing time). You might choose to pray, explore further on your own, or climb the dome (separate ticket required, ~551 steps or elevator+stairs). Your guide can point you to the dome entrance if you’re interested. There’s also a gift shop and holy water font near the exit if you’d like to take home a unique memento or fill a small bottle with blessed water.
Itinerary -Here’s an overview of what you’ll experience during the 1-hour tour:

1.Meet Your Guide & Check-In (5–10 minutes):

Arrive at the meeting point, Via Plauto 17A in Borgo Pio (just outside the Vatican). Meet your friendly Made in Rome Tours coordinator and expert guide. They will get you checked in, provide you with your radio headset, and introduce the plan for the tour. (If you’ve just arrived in Rome, this is a great time to ask any quick questions about the city!).

2.St. Peter’s Square Introduction (10 minutes):

EnjoSt. Peter’s Square Introduction (10 minutes): Walk with your guide towards St. Peter’s Square, the monumental plaza in front of the Basilica. As you approach, take in the grand Via della Conciliazione, the boulevard leading to the Vatican. In the square, your guide will point out the impressive Egyptian obelisk at the center and the encircling colonnades designed by Bernini. Look up to spot 140 statues of saints perched atop the columns – a truly awe-inspiring sight. You’ll learn about the architectural genius of the square’s design and hear a fun fact: the Pope often addresses the public here from a window of the Apostolic Palace during Wednesday audiences and Sunday blessings. This introduction sets the scene, as you stand in the very heart of the Vatican City.

3. Skip-the-Line Entry & Security (5 minutes):

Your guide will lead you to a special entrance for groups, bypassing the long public line snaking across the piazza. With our skip-the-line access, you’ll move quickly through the security checkpoint. (All visitors must pass through airport-style security – but don’t worry, our priority access means a much shorter wait!) In minutes, you’ll be stepping through the massive bronze doors of St. Peter’s Basilica, entering directly into its magnificent interior without delay.

4.Guided Exploration of St. Peter’s Basilica (30 minutes):

Guided Exploration of St. Peter’s Basilica (30 minutes): Now the real marvels begin. Inside the basilica, your guide will walk you through the must-see masterpieces and hidden details of this sacred space. Gaze upon Michelangelo’s Pietà, the breathtaking marble sculpture of Mary holding Jesus, carved by the artist when he was only 24. (It’s the only artwork Michelangelo ever signed – ask your guide why!). Stand beneath the soaring dome designed in part by Michelangelo, and look up at the Latin inscription around its base, each letter over 2 meters high. Admire Bernini’s Baldachin, the ornate bronze canopy towering over the Papal altar – an incredible feat of Baroque art crafted from bronze taken from the Pantheon. As you wander through ornate chapels and monuments, your guide will share the stories of artistic genius, religious significance, and historical intrigue that make each site come alive. From the polished marble floors to the glittering mosaics and statues of saints, every inch of St. Peter’s has a story, and you’ll hear the most fascinating highlights. You’ll also see the Papal Throne (Cathedra Petri) at the far end of the basilica – a monumental chair said to contain the wooden throne of St. Peter, encased in a sculptural glory by Bernini. Throughout the tour, feel free to ask questions. Our guides are passionate storytellers who make sure the experience is engaging and tailored to the group’s interests. (Audio headsets ensure you catch every word, even as you stand awe-struck under the dome!).

5.Visit to the Papal Grottoes (10 minutes):

If open and accessible on the day of your visit, you’ll descend to the Vatican Grottoes, the underground crypt beneath the basilica’s main floor. Here, many Popes (and some royals and church figures) are laid to rest. In this serene space, you’ll see tombs of pontiffs from centuries past, including the tomb of Saint Peter — an incredibly meaningful moment as you stand near the resting place of the apostle who is said to be the first Pope. Your guide will quietly explain the significance of this area (voices are kept low out of respect). It’s a part of the Basilica many visitors miss, but you won’t – another advantage of a guided tour. (Please note: The Grottoes can sometimes close without notice for religious events. If that happens, we’ll spend a bit more time in the Basilica’s upper level instead.)

6. Conclusion and Further Exploration:

After about an hour of discovery, your guide will conclude the tour inside St. Peter’s Basilica. They’ll be happy to answer any final questions you have – whether about what you’ve seen, other things to do in Rome, or the best angle for that perfect dome photograph! You can choose to stay inside the Basilica after the tour to soak up more details, visit areas on your own that piqued your interest, or even ascend to the dome on your own (tickets for the dome climb can be bought on-site). Alternatively, you can exit the Basilica with the group and enjoy the rest of your day in Rome, filled with newfound appreciation for this spectacular church. Tip: Before you leave Vatican City, you might drop by the official post office in the square to send a postcard home with a Vatican stamp – a unique souvenir of your visit!

(Itinerary timings are approximate. The order of sites visited may vary slightly based on crowd conditions and Vatican regulations, but you will experience all the highlights described.)

FAQ

Question 1 :Do we really get to skip all the lines?

With our tour, you’ll skip the regular public entry line which can stretch for hours. We have a reserved group entrance that by-passes the main queue. That said, everyone still goes through security, so there may be a short wait at the metal detectors – but it’s much faster than waiting in the general line outside. Essentially, yes: you skip the long line of general visitors. Once past security, our group goes straight into the Basilica without any additional queues.

Question 2:Is St. Peter’s Basilica free to enter? Why pay for a tour?

It’s true that general entry to St. Peter’s is free. However, the lines are often extremely long, costing you 1-2 hours of your day just to get inside. By joining our tour, you’re paying for the convenience of skip-the-line entry and, most importantly, the expertise of a professional guide. Inside the Basilica, there are very few signs or explanations. Our guide will share the rich stories behind what you’re seeing – from Michelangelo’s sculptures to papal tombs – transforming a self-guided wander into a truly enlightening experience. In short, the tour saves you time and adds tremendous value to your visit. (Plus, we include the headsets and handle all the logistics for you.

Question 3:What is the group size? Will it be crowded?

We keep our groups personable, usually around 30 people or fewer. This ensures you can interact with your guide and not feel lost in a large crowd. St. Peter’s Basilica itself is a popular place, so there will be other visitors around, especially during peak season. But with a group and headsets, you’ll have no trouble sticking with your guide and hearing everything. We aim to strike the perfect balance – lively group energy but still an intimate experience in the massive space of the Basilica.

Question 4:Can I bring children on this tour?

Absolutely! Children are very welcome on this tour. Kids under 7 can even join free of charge (just let us know when booking). Our guides are great at adjusting the storytelling to keep younger travelers engaged – think fascinating legends, interesting visuals, and a pace that works for the whole family. St. Peter’s can spark awe in any age, and we’ve had many families tell us their kids were talking about the “big church” for days after. Just remember the dress code applies to children as well (have a light cover-up for shoulders/legs if needed). Strollers can be brought, though there are a few stair areas (you may need to carry strollers briefly). Overall, it’s a family-friendly experience and a wonderful educational opportunity for kids.

Question 5 :Does the tour include climbing the Dome of St. Peter’s?

No, the dome climb is not included in this one-hour tour, as it requires additional tickets and about 30-45 extra minutes. Our tour focuses on the Basilica’s interior and the Papal tombs. However, you can absolutely climb the dome on your own after the tour if you wish. It’s a fantastic add-on for those with the energy! To do so, you’ll need to purchase a dome ticket (currently around €10 for stairs or €15 for elevator + stairs). Your guide can point you to where the dome entrance line begins at the end of the tour. Many of our guests choose to do it afterwards – the panoramic view of Rome from the top of Michelangelo’s dome is breathtaking. Just keep in mind the dome has 551 steps (there is an elevator to cut out part of the climb, but you’ll still have 320 steps to climb after the elevator). It’s optional and self-guided, and you can decide spontaneously on the day if you feel up for it.

Question 6:What if I need to cancel or change my booking?

We understand that travel plans can change. You can cancel your booking up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund – no questions asked. If you need to change to a different day or time, just contact us as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to accommodate you (changes are subject to availability, but we really try to be flexible). Our goal is for you to have a stress-free experience, from booking through the actual tour. For any last-minute issues, reach out to us by phone or email. We’re here to help make sure you don’t miss out on visiting St. Peter’s with us!

Question 7 :Is the tour offered in other languages?

Yes, besides English we can often arrange guides in Spanish, French, or German (and other languages on request). The default language for the tour (especially when booking online) is English, since that’s what most of our guides speak daily. If you or someone in your group prefers a different language, please contact us before booking to confirm availability of a guide in that language at your desired time. We will do our best to accommodate you. All our guides, regardless of language, are certified experts in Vatican and art history, so you’re in great hands.

Question 8:Do I need to print my confirmation or bring any ID?

No need to print your voucher – a mobile confirmation is perfectly fine. Just show it on your smartphone or device when you check in at our office. We do recommend carrying a valid ID (like a passport or driver’s license), as sometimes Vatican Security may do random ID checks, especially if you have a reduced ticket or youth price (if applicable). For most adults, ID isn’t checked at entry, but it’s good practice to have it, as it is anywhere when you travel. Our team at check-in will mainly need to see your booking confirmation (digital is okay) and match it with your name.

Have more questions? Feel free to reach out to us via email or live chat on our website. We’re here to help you have an amazing experience from start to finish. We look forward to seeing you at St. Peter’s Basilica and sharing this unforgettable journey through art and faith with you!
